Human Resources and Training in Mental Health Human resources are the most valuable asset of a mental health service. A mental health service relies on the competence and motivation of its personnel to promote mental health, prevent disorders and provide care for people with mental disorders. This module provides a comprehensive approach to human resources and training for mental health in countries. It includes guidance on the development of a human resource policy for mental health that provides a coherent framework for workforce development. It outlines a systematic method to determine the number of personnel and the mix of competencies required by a range of mental health services, including general hospitals, primary care and community settings. The training requirements for mental health in a country are outlined and linked to the functions of services and the competencies required. Human resource management strategies in relation to leadership, motivation, recruitment, deployment and retention are highlighted as an essential part of any strategy to build an effective workforce. Finally, approaches to curriculum development, continuing education, training and supervision are described in order to promote evidence-based practices which ultimately meet the mental heath needs of consumers and the population at large.
